OK yesterday i was out front of the house with one of the recuse puppies. A very cool little pit bull that was given to the rescue via the SPCA. they were due to be euthinized. Well in our mission to build relation ships with as many rescues large or small every dog saved could be a smile in someones life. But back to the story. So i sit there going over the commands that i try to teach to the rescue dogs that are fostered with me I heard chirp chirp chirp.Wow just five feet from me and Stanley a fledgling robin red breast.Unable to fly,and just hopping around.I swoop up the puppy putting him back in the house. While calling to my sons that were close by.Hurry get me a box.Of course both ask what, and why do you need a box? Than they are in shock heres Dad holding this baby bird.So now i am faced with a decision what to do about this baby that cant fly.Thats now stuck on the ground with now way to have the safety of the nest any more. Hum what to do? So off to Google i go. With such a powerful tool at hand i find my self with many cool facts. The most important thing i learned was this is very normal for robins. The mother will continue to bring food. Now this is great but there are at least 2 cats that i see from time to and i have only seen them at night.Well its my wifes birthday and we were going out to dinner and was not going to be able to hang out and watch over this bird.So got my self a box in went some paper towel for bedding and off to the store to get some mealies. The mealies were labels medium but rather small.Just right to feed the fledgling that i have named Robbin.Well i was able to feed Robbin and he has a health apatite feeding every 1hr to 2 hrs.
So now i have this little bird was in my house with seven dogs all wanting to know what does dad have.Oh i smell it.I can see the expression on each face as Chirp comes from this box.Now i as have to get my dogs to calm down and respect my words (baby baby baby baby). One by one as they approach with a calming tone i relay with confidence this is mine and you will be calm and slow. Then starting with duke the biggest and alpha male of the house was let close enough to get a good sniff with a very gentle touch of his nose. He was now satisfied and than i was able to repeat this process with great results. All my dog responded with curiosity and gentleness .
Now as time has passed with my watching and caring for this baby Robin i realize i have to pick the wife up at work and out the door i went but with the lack of time i put the trash up and out the door i went i was just about at the front door of her work when i realized i left the baby bird on the desk covered with a blanket.I call the wife tell her whats up so that i can just grab her and go.All the while thinking the bird should be fine i still find my self thinking i got to hurry. That 25 minute ride home had me thinking that in my attempt to save this bird and give him the chance to reach the ability to find flight. As i open the door i find my only cat Rocky at the ripe old age of 18 has choose to lay down next to the bird cage and take a Knapp?!?!?!
So it turns out Robbin was safe, and right where i left Robin.Siting on the desk (wiping my brow).
So off to dinner witch was a double meaning for my wife.It was her birthday and it just so happens than Wet Nose Rescue has managed to get a local restaurant to donate 10 of the daily take as a donation to the rescue on every Thursday from June to end of July.Might as well give them a nod for not only great food and pleasant atmosphere but a really big heart for the dogs 2 thumbs up. For those of you that might read this and would like to check out this local place its the CHURCHVILLE INN located in Feasterville Pa. You can alway just Google it for directions.Upon returning home from dinner the baby bird was hungry and as he her my voice the chirp started. So like a good foster mom i break out the mealies. And to my surprise Robin downed better than 5 mealies. One Was bite in half and my dog eat the other half as it feel. As i guess the dog figured it must be food.I than laid on my bed propped up with pillows and the Robin just under cover and using my body warmth to keep him warm.Than after about an hour or so I put him in a cage up hi and safe for the night with a nice blanket to cover him.So off to bed i went. The morning come up quick it seems as just around 6:30 am i find my self stirring with my cat now alerted to my wife moving around he starts with a constant meowing over and over.Just enough to make my wife jump up and feed that cat.now i hear the chirp chirp from the cage. I turn to my wife and say i guess robin up and want to be fed. She reply s no honey robin has been lightly chirping for over an hour.Feeling like a bad mommy I go get the mealies and proceed to feed 6 nice fat ones to Robin. After breakfast i take robin out side so he can walk around and take a poop.I than her the mother responding to the chirp.looking very carefully i do see a Adult robin in the tree .I than think i needed to make the decision weather or not to leave him out side and wait to see if his mother is going to return and continue to feed him.So with the effort always to return a wild baby to the wild but of-course trying to make sure that Robin and any other animal back to the wild .As i can say that what man has done sometime when it faces the care for the animal in nature has not always been good for the wild animals. With that being said i try to help when ever i can .now i sit here at 2:33 pm and after checking on the baby several times every hour i have seen its mother return every 30 minute or so to feed the baby.I think this one has a good chance to make it.I hope i can help this one make it we shall see.
